According to a recent study by the European Journalism Observatory (EJO), European journalism is largely a male affair, despite the fact that in many of the 11 countries surveyed women make up around half the number of journalists and more women than men are choosing journalism as a career.
Community radios show us a different picture. Young women (and men), often with a diverse background, are at the forefront in producing news, live reports, in-depth features, music shows and podcasts. Women are also leading some of Europe’s most progressive community radios as managers. We have invited some of them to Lausanne to talk about their work, share ideas and inspiration, within the framework of the Across Generations workshop.
What can we learn from community radios in terms of creating an enabling environment for young people to experiment with media-making and radio management?
The upcoming Council of Europe report “Across Generations” explores how community radios can serve as an antidote to social fragmentation and strengthen cross-generational debate and engagement, also in areas that are under-served by traditional media outlets.
Lola de Koning, a young researcher in Media and Culture at Utrecht University, will present preliminary findings of the report. With a background in gender studies, Ilona Toller, program coordinator at radio ORANGE 94.0 in Vienna, ensures that children, students, women and genderqueer radio volunteers find their voice through the largest community radio in German-speaking countries. Jürg Morgenegg manages Kanal K, a local community radio with a 30-year history, bringing a diversity of languages and sound to Canton Aargau. Radio 3FACH in Lucerne sends its moderators and managers into retirement at an early age – at 25 and 30 respectively – so don’t miss this chance to meet Alice Reinhard and Melanie Reber who are currently leading the best youth radio in Switzerland. Our host city will be represented by Laura Bock, the president of Fréquence Banane, the student-led campus radio of Lausanne and Geneva. Last but not least, award-winning journalist Lina Chawaf, co-founder of Rozana FM, will share her experiences in radio training of girls and boys in Syria and Yemen. The session will be moderated by Nadia Bellardi, media consultant and co-author of the “Across Generations report”, on behalf of COMMIT and CMFE.
